Integrity Is Not Built by Decree

Policies, standards, and procedures are fundamental, but a culture of integrity takes root when institutional values are lived out in daily life

Every organization has rules, processes, and guidelines that direct its operations. These tools are essential for promoting security, transparency, and clarity in relationships. However, a culture of integrity does not arise solely from the existence of documents. It gains meaning when institutional values move beyond the page and begin to guide people’s attitudes and decisions.

Therefore, it is not enough to simply establish rules and controls. It is essential that employees and leaders understand their role in building an environment guided by responsibility, respect, and consistency between words and actions.

A culture of integrity is also present in seemingly simple situations: in respecting processes and complying with institutional standards, in the responsible use of resources, in the protection of confidential information, and in the way we relate to colleagues, students, service recipients, families, and other stakeholders with whom we interact.

It is further strengthened by openness to dialogue, a willingness to clarify doubts, and the ability to make responsible choices in the face of challenges and uncertainties. It is attitudes like these that transform guidelines into concrete actions and contribute to relationships based on trust.

In the Congregation of Holy Cross, acting with integrity means committing to the values that inspire our work and helping to protect the credibility built up over the course of our history. The more these principles are present in our daily decisions and interactions, the more solid our institutional environment will be, and the greater the consistency between what we say and what we do.

Building this culture is an ongoing process that depends on everyone’s participation and is renewed daily through choices that, even when subtle, help preserve trust and ensure the work’s longevity.

While Compliance guides us along the path and the Code of Ethics and Conduct directs our decisions, it is the culture of integrity that transforms these guidelines into an integral part of who we are and how we act.
