When the Answer Isn’t So Simple: Dealing with Ethical Conflicts in Daily Life

The new edition of the Code of Ethics and Conduct reinforces the values of the Congregation of Holy Cross and guides employees and managers in promoting a culture of integrity, respect, transparency, and accountability in everyday relationships and decision-making

The Code of Ethics and Conduct is one of the Congregation of Santa Cruz’s key management and guidance tools. It translates institutional values and principles into practical guidelines that support day-to-day decisions and relationships. More than just a regulatory document, it serves as a guide for situations where the answers are not always clear, helping employees and managers act responsibly, transparently, and in accordance with CSC’s principles.

In an increasingly dynamic environment, many challenges arise in gray areas, when we must make decisions in the face of interests, relationships, or circumstances that may influence (or appear to influence) our judgment. At such times, the Code invites us to reflect not only on what is permitted, but also on what strengthens the trust, impartiality, and credibility of our actions, contributing to the integrity and enhanced reputation of the Congregation.

For this reason, in 2026, the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the Congregation of the Holy Cross was revised, updated, and released in its second edition. Published in both print and digital formats, the new edition reflects current challenges, reinforces institutional guidelines, and further contributes to an organizational culture guided by integrity, respect, and transparency. This revision reaffirms the CSC’s commitment to its institutional values, offering guidelines that are more attuned to the realities and dilemmas that may arise in the course of our activities.

Integrity is also built through small, everyday choices and behaviors. The way we communicate, treat people, share information, and handle differing opinions directly influences the quality of the work environment. For this reason, the Code reinforces the importance of respect, empathy, valuing diversity, and healthy coexistence, making it clear that there is no room for discrimination, harassment, abuse of authority, or any practice that compromises people’s dignity. Often, behaviors considered commonplace or seemingly harmless can cause discomfort and lead to unintended consequences. Recurring jokes that embarrass colleagues, derogatory comments about personal characteristics, excluding someone from team conversations or activities, and even turning a blind eye to inappropriate conduct are situations that warrant attention. Promoting relationships based on dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect is everyone’s responsibility. More than just an institutional expectation, this approach is essential to strengthening the culture of integrity, trust, and care that underpins CSC’s Mission.

In this context, it is important to remember that no one needs to face an ethical dilemma alone. The Code itself encourages a culture of dialogue and trust, in which employees feel comfortable asking questions, sharing concerns, and seeking guidance whenever necessary. The Governance and Compliance department, together with leadership and the relevant departments, is available to provide support and guidance on risk prevention and decision-making. Seeking clarification does not demonstrate insecurity or a lack of knowledge; on the contrary, it demonstrates responsibility, prudence, and a commitment to the institution’s values. By using the Code of Ethics and Conduct as a guide for our choices and turning to the channels for support when faced with uncertainty, we strengthen the transparency, trust, and culture of integrity that we wish to build and live out every day at the Congregation of Santa Cruz.
